Watchmaker's tools laid out on a workshop bench

Why Pelangi Tempa

What Distinguishes a Considered Workshop

There are many places in Kuala Lumpur where a watch can be serviced. What varies is the depth of attention, the transparency of process, and the willingness to work at the pace the calibre demands.

Core Advantages of Our Workshop

Sixteen Years of Specialised Practice

The workshop has focused on mechanical watch servicing and restoration since 2009, developing depth rather than breadth across calibre types and service scenarios.

Written Assessment Before Work Begins

No piece enters the bench without a documented intake — photographs, observations, and a discussion with the owner about any specific concerns before a recommendation is made.

Staged Ultrasonic Cleaning

Components are processed through staged cleaning cycles rather than a single bath — an approach that allows each component type to be treated at the appropriate frequency and duration.

Consultation on Every Decision

Key decisions are confirmed with the owner in writing before any non-reversible step is taken. You are part of the process, not notified after the fact.

Extended Regulation Period

Following reassembly, movements are observed across multiple positions over several days — not regulated in a single session and returned immediately.

Conservation-Minded Case Work

Vintage pieces can receive conservation-only treatment on request. Original surface geometry and character are preserved wherever the condition permits.

What Each Benefit Means in Practice

Expertise Rooted in Training

The workshop's founder trained with a watchmaker in Geneva before establishing Pelangi Tempa. The team has continued to deepen that foundation across sixteen years of practice, developing familiarity with the quirks of specific calibres, the material characteristics of different case metals, and the demands of Kuala Lumpur's climate on lubricants and seals.

What this means for your piece

  • Calibre-specific knowledge informs every service decision
  • Familiarity with period components for vintage work
  • Understanding of Malaysian climate effects on watch maintenance

What this means for your piece

  • Nothing is missed in the intake — the record is there to refer back to
  • Scope of work is understood before pricing is confirmed
  • Written communication replaces verbal assumptions

A Documented, Methodical Process

Every piece enters the workshop through a written intake process — photographs, a condition note, and a record of the owner's observations. This documentation travels with the watch through every stage of work. It is not a formality; it is a practical tool that prevents miscommunication and supports a clear conversation about scope and cost before any work begins.

Owner-Centred Service Approach

We treat owners as participants in the service process rather than recipients of a completed job. For Premium Restoration work in particular, the owner is consulted at key decision points — parts sourcing, surface treatment choices, and any work that cannot be reversed. This requires more communication, and we consider that communication part of the service.

What this means for your piece

  • No non-reversible action without your written agreement
  • Your preferences about originality are respected
  • You are informed at meaningful stages, not just on collection

What this means for your piece

  • Pricing confirmed after assessment, before work begins
  • Published starting figures give a clear reference point
  • No hidden additions after the fact

Transparent Pricing Structure

Published figures — from MYR 880 for case restoration through to MYR 2,140 for the Premium Restoration Programme — represent starting points that are confirmed after intake. Final scope is discussed with the owner before any work proceeds. Our preference is for no surprises in either direction.

Measurable Outcomes at Completion

Movement regulation is conducted across multiple positions and observed over several days. The result is a calibre performing consistently across positions — not regulated in a single position and assumed to perform well in all others. For case work, the result is a surface that matches the original treatment, not one that merely looks clean. Pressure testing figures are documented where applicable.

What this means for your piece

  • Multi-position regulation over several days
  • Written condition report for Premium programme clients
  • Pressure test results documented where performed

What Sets Us Apart

Distinctive Features of Our Practice

Conservation-Only Treatment for Vintage References

Few workshops in the region offer a formal conservation-only option for case work. At Pelangi Tempa, owners of vintage pieces can specify that refinishing be limited to surfaces where wear materially affects appearance — leaving original patina intact where it contributes to the watch's character and provenance.

Photographic Record Throughout

Premium Restoration clients receive a photographic record covering each major stage of work. This document serves as a practical record for the collection — useful for insurance, eventual sale, or simply for understanding what the watch underwent and when.

Heritage Workshop Location

The workshop occupies a shophouse on Jalan Sultan — within the old commercial quarter of Kuala Lumpur that has housed specialist trades across generations. The setting is not incidental; it reflects a deliberate choice to be part of a tradition of careful, patient work rather than a high-turnover retail environment.

Extended Programme for Complex Work

The Premium Restoration Programme — running from ten to sixteen weeks — exists specifically for pieces requiring comprehensive attention. The extended timeline is not a delay; it is the minimum required to work through movement service, case and bracelet restoration, pressure testing, and component sourcing with appropriate care.
